A new project launching today is aiming to shift the power dynamics behind artificial intelligence training data by giving regular users ownership over the conversations they’ve had with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Called the ChatGPT Data Collective, the initiative allows people to upload their personal chat histories to unlock personal insights and earn rewards for contributing their data. The collective is built in partnership with Vana, a service from the Vana Foundation that pitches itself as a “home for people who believe the future of AI starts with human-owned data.”
According to Vana creator and OpenDataLabs Chief Executive Officer Anna Kazlauskas, the goal is to restore agency to people who have unknowingly helped build the most valuable AI datasets in the world. “The ChatGPT Data Collective gives users the power not just to reflect on that data, but to decide how it’s used and valued — putting control and ownership back where it belongs: with the user,” explains Kazlauskas.
Users can join the ChatGPT Data Collective by uploading a .zip file of their exported ChatGPT history. The dataset includes full ChatGPT conversations, feedback provided to the AI and metadata such as subscription level and language settings. Together, the pieces offer a glimpse into how humans communicate with machines, from the questions asked to how tone and curiosity evolve over time.
In return for uploading their datasets, users receive $GPT tokens based on the amount and quality of their data.
$GPT tokens act as both a reward and a governance tool. Token holders can vote on how the shared dataset is used, who can access it and which new tools should be funded. Future applications may include journaling features, personal memory analysis and reflective AI experiences based on individual data.
The project is structured as a decentralized autonomous organization, or DAO, meaning governance is community-led rather than controlled by a single company. It also promises full transparency as data remains encrypted until users choose to contribute it and can be updated or deleted at any time.
The ChatGPT Data Collective comes amid ongoing criticism of major AI companies for using user interactions to train models without consent or compensation. The collective says it offers an alternative with a privacy-first, user-driven model that aims to rebalance who benefits from the massive value generated by AI training data.
