China’s artificial intelligence (AI) industry surpassed RMB 900 billion (US$124 billion) in 2024, marking a 24% year-on-year increase, according to new data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). As of September 2025, China is home to more than 5,300 AI companies—around 15% of the global total—forming a complete industrial chain spanning infrastructure, model frameworks, and applications.

CAICT said the AI infrastructure layer generated RMB 309.9 billion in revenue last year, up 54% year-on-year, while the model framework layer grew 18% to RMB 31.5 billion, and the application layer rose 13% to RMB 566.5 billion, driven by AI-powered smartphones, computers, and connected vehicles. The institute also unveiled the “Top 10 AI Keywords for 2025,” including foundation super models, autonomous agents, embodied intelligence, world models, and open-source ecosystems.
