China’s EHang, a Nasdaq-listed company that makes autonomous aerial vehicles, will use high-performance lithium-ion battery cells from Gotion High-Tech for its EH216 series air taxis in a move it hopes will improve the flight range of its products in preparation for commercial operation. Gotion, one of the biggest Chinese battery makers – and one that counts Volkswagen as its largest shareholder – will provide EHang with its 46-series cylindrical battery, according to a statement published on Wednesday. The 46-series denotes the battery’s 46 millimeter diameter, a format similar to Tesla’s 4680 battery technology. Headquartered in the eastern Chinese city of Hefei and with manufacturing bases in the US and Europe, Gotion showcased its 46-series battery cells for the first time in 2022 at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference in Las Vegas, with the company saying they have an energy density of 310 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg).
