For those that had purchased a StarBook MK VI laptop 3+ years ago over the advertised support for Coreboot, Star Labs has now delivered with a Coreboot build finally available and working for this AMD Ryzen 5000 series powered laptop.

UK-based Star Labs has now delivered on Coreboot support for the StarBook MK VI laptop. This GitHub ticket has tracked the ordeal since January 2023 when a user had ordered a StarBook with Coreboot albeit arrived with an AMI BIOS.

Support was upstreamed to Coreboot for this laptop albeit the necessary binary blob needed for the firmware initialization wasn’t present and what’s been the blocker to customer use. This followed their earlier MK V laptop also with Coreboot.

Star Labs was reportedly waiting on a firmware support package fix for AMD before they could publish a Coreboot image for the AMD Ryzen 5000 series powered laptop. By mid-2023 it was reportedly held up by “internal AMD stuff” without many updates since then. Many customers wondering about the Coreboot support before the topic was locked in February 2025.

To much surprise, today Star Labs and AMD delivered. This commit lands the Coreboot BIOS replacement for the MK VI laptop. Instructions on switching over to the Coreboot build from the AMI BIOS are outlined in these instructions added to the ticket today. Users can switch back as well from Coreboot to the AMI BIOS should any problems arise.

It’s unfortunate it took 3+ years for this laptop support issue to be resolved, but at least it’s finally now been for those using this StarBook MK VI laptop. Kudos to AMD and Star Labs for following through on the advertised support even though it took much longer than expected. Hopefully moving forward for Zen 6 and beyond it will be less of a burden as the AMD openSIL code begins working into shape and the greater industry interest around openSIL+Coreboot.
