What to remember from the year 2025? The Warner takeover? Trump’s interference in Hollywood? Tidal waves Demon Slayer et Ne Zha 2 ? The official launch of the DCU with the Superman by James Gunn? Dozens of biopics about musical artists? A little of all that at once? For our part, we thought at length about the films that we will remember from 2025. One observation emerged, that of having no winner or no indisputable loser, despite the presence ofAvatar 3as there was competition in each area, often on very different aspects. So as in 2024, we instead chose to retain the feature films which were above all striking, for good or bad reasons.
Captain America 4: Brave New World – the outdated Marvel recipe
The Disney blockbuster season began very early in 2025 with, in February, the theatrical release of Captain America 4 : Brave New World. A Marvel which promised us change and which above all proved that the MCU was pulling on its own rope.
Not only did he not know how to embody the slightest renewal with a narration that is still so automatic, but it is the first time that Kevin Feige’s team seems so out of ideas with the recycling of an old story. The worst part is that the story didn’t even concern Captain America, but a completely absent Hulk. Added to this is a promotional campaign focusing on what the film intended to keep as a twist, creating a gap between the fan’s expectations and the construction of the story. A lot of pointless nonsense.

A film to watch to find out what happens to the plot of the Eternals. The criticism.
Life of Chuck – the most beautiful dance move
The lack of box office success Life of Chuck is one of the enigmas of the year. Mike Flanagan, master of fantasy and horror who has accumulated hits on Netflix, returns to the big screen for the first time since his Doctor Sleep in 2019, all with Tom Hiddleston headlining.
An adaptation of a short story by Stephen King (like Walk or Die et The Running Man which will follow in theaters) which offered us an emotional storm as well as a lovely reflection on the passing of time. But more importantly, the film knew how to make the banality dazzling. So for all that, thank you Chuck!
A film to watch to dance again. The criticism.
In The Lost Lands – the catastrophe discreets
Paul WS Anderson (the saga Resident Evil) directing, Milla Jovovich in front of the camera, a film not shown to the press in advance… In The Lost Lands already ticked all the boxes for a potential industrial accident. The result lived up to expectations with a nickname Mad Max in the form of digital mush where everything sounds false, from the decor to the dialogue.
The only quality ofIn The Lost Landsis that it was not in theaters long enough and in so few screenings and cinemas that almost no one was able to admire this masterpiece of bad taste. Paulo films with two shades of color and lots of slow motion, as for Milla and Dave Bautista, they oscillate between bad acting and no acting at all. That this thing was produced is already a miracle.
A film to see to burn your eyes. The criticism.
Escape From the 21st Century – the craziest film of 2025
Escape From the 21st Century is undoubtedly our little nugget of the year due to the madness that emerges from it. We are faced with a film which draws its essence from a cinema of ideas and not of means with assumed generosity. A blockbuster in the tradition ofEverything Everywhere All At Once or from Scott Pilgrim where the director didn’t hold anything back.
Science fiction, superhero, animated, comedy, drama films… The feature film does everything, all the time, and even develops a profound message about the transition to adulthood. With a touch of philosophy and time travel, since we’re there. The perfect example of a cinema experience that you begin without knowing what to expect, then in which you don’t know where you’re going, before leaving the theater, delighted to have gone.
A film to see for its difference. The criticism.
Minecraft – the film that destroyed cinema
Minecraftit’s over $900 million at the box office and a social media presence that has crushed almost all competition. One of the biggest successes of 2025 at the economic level, especially in a context where theater attendance has not been good. To the point where Minecraft 2 was immediately put into the pipes.
However, Minecraft is not only a failure, but it is also the most cynical film of the year. Under the guise of respecting the universe (which has enormous potential and which would have deserved the hands of the fathers of The Great LEGO Adventure), the feature film is designed as a money machine where spectators are invited to film and share sequences produced for this purpose. In the construction, in the constant overacting of Jack Black and Jason Momoa, in the tempo of the comedic lines or the action, everything is designed to be more viral than qualitative, thus openly taking the viewer for an idiot.
A film to watch to make TikTok videos. The criticism.
Thunderbolts* / Superman – hope for superheroes
We had to tie them. On the one hand, Marvel which had failed to renew itself with Captain America 4 shows us that with a little risk-taking and creative freedom, we can produce a superhero film where mental health counts more than powers. A way of showing that the genre can also tell something about humans and a hope for the MCU. Fantastic Four having then come to dampen this hope with a once again very classic treatment.
On the other hand, James Gunn signs a Superman where kindness becomes punk and you can risk everything for a dog or a squirrel. A benevolent work which reconnects with the essence of the hero, placing him again as a symbol to follow rather than as a God. Two imperfect films, but which, each in their own way, did good for the team, the genre, and the spectators.
Films to watch to be punk. The criticism of Thunderbolts* and of Superman.
The Gardener – the palm of uneasiness
If you read us regularly, you cannot have missed the number of times your servant talks about Gardener in his papers, since the sad day of January 9. Yes, it was at the beginning of 2025 that evil struck in the guise of a French comedy carried by Michaël Youn and Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Prime Video gave us an unforgettable moment where each sequence is worse than the previous one. The humor is heavy, the characters are detestable and the actors… sorry, there is no one who can justify this profession in this specific case. An action comedy that thinks it has something first-rate when even our JCVD is under-exploited by a camera that doesn’t know what to film. Such mediocrity that everyone wanted to see the shipwreck, making Gardener the number 1 film on the platform for a time. A great feat nonetheless.
A film to watch if you like actors playing like plants. The criticism.
KPop Demon Hunters – the phenomenon of
It may be curious to put Kpop Demon Hunters among the nuggets of 2025, while, let’s be honest, the Netflix film does not only have qualities, far from it, and we could cite many other more deserving works. However, we must also know how to salute when a film manages to become a social phenomenon, when nothing predestined it to do so.
Far from the tout Minecraft, KPDH has a real artistic approach in its animation and its staging, the humor works well and the songs… We can no longer go a day without hearing Golden in a public place or event anywhere in the world. The film was released almost silently on Netflix, and has continued to shout its existence with panache ever since. We can criticize him, but we must know how to applaud.
A film to see to be Soda Pop. The criticism.
Kaamelott, Second part, part 1 – the missed appointment
Like Kpop Demon Hunters in its category, Kaamelott, Second part – part 1 should not be in a selection of the worst flops of 2025 whenElusive 3 exists. But we had to mark the intention given the expectation that Alexandre Astier’s film has aroused.
The continuation of the adventures of Arthur Pendragon was undoubtedly one of the biggest expectations of 2025, including for professionals in the field and French exhibitions. If it worked rather well, it is well below its predecessor and above all, the critics, press or public are far from having defended the feature film. A multitude of characters, an abundance of subplots and a poor stitching of the whole made this Kaamelott 2 an almost generalized disappointment, a doom and gloom. And the more time passes, the less we appreciate it.
A film to see to get a big kick out of it. The criticism.
Frankenstein – our winter favorite
Guillermo del Toro et Frankensteina long-running love story that finally gives birth to a film. The director who loves monsters takes on one of his greatest representatives, the one who has inhabited his cinema since the beginning. Which gives rise to a Netflix work which would have deserved the most beautiful big screen as the master’s creation is so pictorial.
Of course, we admit the lengths and the few failures, but they are drowned in an ocean of love that del Toro has for the work of Mary Shelley and the monster in particular. The director reinvents himself, appropriates the creature and delivers his version of the tale in a baroque romantic work where the quest for God becomes that of a father. Simply sumptuous.
A film to see for its monstrosity. The criticism.
War of the Worlds – the worst Amazon ad
We’re back on Prime Video (which also has good films, look… in short, there are some!) with a new adaptation of War of the Worlds. The alien invasion experienced through a screen, there was an idea (and a lack of budget) in the project.
If incoherence had to be reincarnated as a film, it would be this one, as there is so much of it in each sequence. Ice Cube is a mine of ludicrous facial expressions while the other actors only have two expressions. The special effects are ridiculous and the original plot gives birth here to a version written in a gas station during a fill-up. But where the feature film definitely makes a fool of itself is during its magnificent product placement for Amazon where we actually have a buying guide on screen.
A film to watch when making your Amazon purchases. The criticism.
Sinners – the obvious?
When it came time to start looking at this article, as much as there was no shortage of flop candidates, on the other side of the scale, we had difficulty establishing a list. We had years where the crown seemed obvious to yours truly (Godzilla Minus One in 2023, Civil War last year), while in 2025, none has so far surpassed the competition as to be untouchable. As a result, our choice did not fall on an untouchable, but on the one who systematically came up in our mouths as soon as we considered the question: Sinners.
Ryan Coogler’s film stands out as a visceral work that pays as much attention to its content as its form; speaks to us about African-American culture as well as integration and appropriation; delivers a musical sequence of incredible power. And then there are two Michael B. Jordans and vampires. A rich, complex feature film, which still marks our minds several months later. Which is becoming more and more rare.
A film to watch to sing the blues. The criticism.
