Driving slower helps reduce the risk of accidents: all road safety studies converge towards this conclusion. And yet, work carried out by Geotab, a Canadian company specializing in connected solutions for automobiles, announces that it is possible to improve the range of your electric car in winter by driving… faster!

A controversial study

The main argument put forward by the study is simple, simplistic press: by driving faster, you reach your destination more quickly and therefore you draw less on the battery to heat the passenger compartment. It would even compensate for the extra energy needed to accelerate down the road. On the other hand, above 110 km/h, the impact on the battery becomes greater because of wind resistance: more energy is required to compensate for aerodynamic drag.

To obtain these results, Geotab used data from sedans, for a total of 180,000 hours of driving data (350,000 routes) smoothed on a 65 kWh battery model to enable comparisons. The study also collected data from electric utilities. But apart from the increased risk of accidents, it does not specify the average journey time, even though it is very important: after a certain time, it is no longer useful to heat the passenger compartment, since it has reached the right temperature.

The preheating of the vehicle when the car is connected to the power supply is also evacuated, which is nevertheless a usual practice among owners of electric vehicles. A study to be taken with the greatest caution, therefore, like driving on the road…
