But even after the migration has been completed, SAP developers still need to continue their training, according to DSAG. Anyone who continues to work like they do on ECC will miss out on the possibilities of current SAP technologies – even if everything still works technically, warn the authors. At the same time, they can immediately apply what they have learned, solidifying the new knowledge.

AI does not replace developer skills

According to DSAG, this also applies to development in the SAP environment: AI tools can generate and explain code. However, the prerequisite is that developers can also evaluate the results from a technical perspective. “Only those who understand what good SAP code is can use AI as an accelerator,” say the authors. Otherwise, AI will act as a risk amplifier and, in the worst case, will simply accelerate the creation of technical debt.

The prerequisite for the successful use of AI is therefore solid software engineering knowledge, automated tests and an understanding of modern SAP development.

The five recommendations of the DSAG

DSAG therefore recommends CIOs to firmly integrate further training into their transformation strategy. The association specifically names five measures, namely:

  • binding learning paths for different roles such as ABAP, CAP or integration developers as well as business consultants,
  • suitable sandbox and test environments to provide,
  • Training times must be included in the capacity planning,
  • Training to be interlinked with migration and modernization projectsas well as
  • existing Use DSAG guidelines as a reference framework for development.
