This is a news that should make the regulars of getaway at low prices smile. In the coming weeks, traveling with Ryanair will be a little less a Tetris game. No more bag of 40 X 25 x 20 cm, the company will adopt a new standard dimension of 40 x 30 x 20 cm. A change that may seem minimal, but which makes the authorized volume pass from 20 to 24 liters. This 20 % gain represents the welcome space for a pair of shoes or an additional toilet bag, without fear of having to get their hands on the wallet at the boarding gate.

“This change will be implemented in the coming weeks, as our baggage templates at the airport is adjusted”confirmed a company spokesperson.

A gesture calculated in a European context

So, has Ryanair suddenly become a philanthropist? Not quite. This decision comes as European airlines, under the aegis of the Airlines for Europe Association (A4E), have just agreed on a size minimal Municipality for cabin luggage, fixed at 40 x 30 x 15 cm. This harmonization aims to end the puzzles juggling with different rules for each carrier.

By choosing dimensions slightly superior to this new standard, Ryanair offers a small communication victory. The company also underlined in a press release that its “Personal luggage franchise will be greater than the European standard”. A skillful way to restore an often bored image.

A maneuver to avoid the worst?

However, this harmonization hides another issue, much more strategic for low-cost companies. Last month, the European Parliament voted in favor of a measure which would oblige all companies to authorize free Two luggage in the cabin. A perspective deemed “unreatiable” by Ryanair or Easyjet, who see it as a threat to their economic model.

By agreeing on a single minimum size, the airlines show white paw and hope to convince the European authorities that the sector can self -regulate. It is a compromise to try to block a regulation that they consider much more restrictive.

For the traveler, the result is currently positive. Whether it is a real desire to simplify the life of its customers or a well -felt political maneuver, the observation is there: traveling light with Ryanair will soon be a little more comfortable. Good news for the portfolio and peace of mind, especially since it happens a few weeks after the tightening of boarding methods.
