As part of macOS 26.5, Apple has also added various functions for administrators and enterprise users – or made bug fixes necessary for business operations. The company has now submitted a corresponding information document. Admins and MDM managers should read it as soon as possible.

Black screen and crash errors
In contrast to its predecessor, macOS 26.4.1, in which Apple only fixed problems with 802.1X WLANs that occurred on certain machines with an M5 processor and an active content filter, the company-related fixes in macOS 26.5 are more extensive. It happened that Macs started with a black screen after a software update – Apple left it open whether this only affected managed systems or all computers.
When mounting SMB shares, the entire system also restarted, as did “some” content filter extensions on the MacBook Air M5 and MacBook Pro M5 Pro and M5 Max. If companies used smart cards to log in to the Mac, it could show password errors despite successful login. Finally, X11 apps that use XQuartz (which should be very rare) now show correct windows again when they are resized.
Certificate problems and SMB without Active Directory
Apple also fixed an issue where root and intermediate certificates were not updated when renewing an MDM device’s enrollment. The last innovation concerns SMB connections on Macs without a connection to an Active Directory: DNS SRV lookups for the nsmb.conf configured addresses _ldap._tcp. and _gc._tcp. carried out. If domain controllers are found, the client attempts to log in to them in turn. If this goes wrong, the client uses the original server name as a fallback.
Installing macOS 26.5 should also be done quickly because, as usual, Apple has fixed numerous security issues, some of which can also be attacked remotely. In total there are over 50 bugs documented in detail plus more than two handfuls of gaps that Apple does not describe in detail.
