The social media giant Facebook has announced that it has started rolling out passkey support for users on both iOS and Android devices. As per a blog, the new login method – passkeys – is designed to be more secure and convenient than traditional passwords that have been the case so far.

What will be changed for you? Instead of typing in a password, you can now use your fingerprint, face scan, or device PIN to access your accounts. This is a major move to make the authentication of your social media app passwordless. Note that Google, Apple, and Microsoft are also getting similar features.

What Are Passkeys?

For those who are unaware of it, know that Passkeys are digital credentials that live on your phone or device. They work by verifying your identity through built-in security features like Face ID, Touch ID, or a PIN. That means even if someone has your username, they can’t access your account without physically having your device.

Since passkeys don’t rely on traditional passwords, they’re also resistant to phishing attacks and password-related scams.

Facebook Passkey: How to Set It Up?

To set up your passkeys, you need to follow simple steps:

  • To begin, go to the Accounts Center in your Facebook app’s Settings.
  • Here, you’ll see an option to create a passkey.
  • Once it’s set up, you can use it to log in to your Facebook account on your phone.
  • Note that if your current device doesn’t support passkeys, don’t worry — you can still use your password or other existing login methods.

Not just for Facebook, but the passkey feature will also be coming to Messenger in the coming months, and you’ll be able to use the same passkey for both apps. Plus, passkeys can autofill payment info when you’re using Meta Pay, making online purchases a bit smoother.

Passkeys offer a stronger layer of protection compared to passwords or SMS codes. Since they’re stored only on your device, and never shared with Facebook or third parties, your login process becomes not only faster but also safer.
