FFmpeg 8.0 is now available! FFmpeg 8.0 is a magnificent update to this widely-used open-source multimedia library and with this new version is the introduction of an OpenAI Whisper filter for automatic speech recognition, many Vulkan Video improvements for greater GPU-accelerated video handling, and a number of CPU performance optimizations.
FFmpeg 8.0 also now depends on NASM Rather than YASM, adds VVC VA-API decoding support, RealVideo 6.0 decoder, OpenMAX video encoders have been deprecated, VVC in Matroska container support, animated JPEG-XL encoding support using libjxl, APV video encoding and decoding, G.728 decoder support, HDR improvements, ProRes RAW decoding, AMD AMF decoding and FSR upscaling, and EXIF metadata parsing support.
Some of the Vulkan work in FFmpeg 8.0 includes VP9 video acceleration, AV1 encode support, faster FFV1 decoding, and Vulkan hardware acceleration for ProRes RAW.
Plus numerous CPU performance optimizations especially with significant performance benefits for AVX-512 CPUs.
FFmpeg 8.0 can be downloaded from FFmpeg Git.
