A class action settlement is an agreement reached to resolve a class action lawsuit, filed by a group of plaintiffs (the class) with similar claims against a common defendant.

Reaching a settlement means that the defendant decided to resolve the claims against them by contributing a certain form of compensation to the plaintiffs, typically cold hard cash.

Sizes for class action settlements vary depending on the circumstances.

They could be worth several hundred million dollars or only a few hundred thousand.

To get their portion of the pot, eligible class members typically have to file a claim form, and at least five recent data breach-based class action settlements have deadlines approaching very soon.

ENZO BIOCHEM

First up is Enzo Biochem, a company that provides diagnostic testing and other services.

It agreed to a $7.5 million settlement pot recently after a 2023 data breach resulted in patient information getting compromised.

The lawsuit filed against Enzo Biochem claimed it failed to “implement reasonable cybersecurity measures that could’ve prevented the data breach.”

Enzo Biochem did not admit any wrongdoing, but agreed to the settlement, with payments going out to those who received a mailed notice from the company.

Claim forms must be filed through the settlement website by June 23, 2025, for payouts of up to $10,000.

RETINA GROUP OF WASHINGTON

Maryland and Virginia-based eye care center Retina Group of Washington also faced a data breach lawsuit recently.

The incident occurred in March 2023, with class members arguing that it should’ve been avoided with proper cybersecurity measures, as the breach allegedly impacted thousands of patients Social Security numbers and health insurance data.

Retina Group of Washington denied any wrongdoing but agreed to a $3.6 million settlement pot.

Qualifying individuals can get up to $300 for out-of-pocket losses and an additional $5,000 for extraordinary out-of-pocket losses that resulted in identity theft or fraud.

What’s a class-action settlement?

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or ‘classes,’ a way to band together in court.

These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.

When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.

Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.

These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.

Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.

There’s also four hours of lost time at $25 per hour.

Those who can’t provide documentation for any losses are eligible for about $100, and claim forms must again by filed by June 23, 2025.

NAVVIS AND SSM HEALTH

Another data breach settlement claim form deadline coming up soon is for Navvis and SSM Health.

The healthcare providers have locations in Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin, and suffered a ransomware attack.

A class action lawsuit was later filed accusing the companies of not taking significant steps to prevent it, and that the breach led to compromised personal information and medical data.

Navvis and SSM Health did not admit to any wrongdoing but agreed to a $6.5 million settlement to resolve the claims and avoid further legal costs.

Eligible candidates can get up to $7,000 in financial compensation, with $5,000 from serious financial damage with proof provided, and $2,000 for incurred out-of-pocket expenses.

The claim form deadline is set for July 7, 2025.

MERS/GOODWILL

Lastly, Goodwill shoppers could also get up to $5,500 from a recent data breach settlement.

Nonprofit Metropolitan Employment Rehabilitation Services (MERS) operates under the Goodwill Industries International network out of Missouri and Illinois.

It recently came under fire from a class action lawsuit after a March 2023 data breach put some customers’ information at risk.

Plaintiffs claimed MERS Missouri Goodwill Industries failed to have appropriate cybersecurity measures to protect customers Social Security numbers and other private details.

MERS didn’t admit to any wrongdoing but agreed to a settlement.

Eligible class members can get $500 for ordinary losses or $5,000 in additional extraordinary losses with proof provided.

A valid claim form must be submitted by July 7, 2025, to get the cash.

There are several other ongoing settlements to watch out for.

For example, cracker eaters could get checks from a $10 million “packaging” settlement with no proof needed.

Senior citizens affected by a data breach at Vi, a luxury living facility, could also get at least $6,500.
