You will see one day, there will be fire under the smoke. Because rumors accumulate and they all converge: the folding iPhone could well become reality in 2026. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, often well informed on Apple’s projects, says that the manufacturer has increased its production forecasts for this unprecedented model. While it was initially a question of 6 to 8 million units, Cupertino would now target 8 to 10 million copies from the first year, with a target between 20 and 25 million in 2027.

Ambitions revised upwards for the folding iPhone

The chosen format would recall that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, with an internal foldable “book” screen. Apple would have found a way to make the fold much less visible, one of the main reproaches addressed to current folding smartphones. On the photograph side, the device would embark four sensors: two for selfies (one outside and one inside), and two on the back. Unlike the latest iPhone, biometric authentication would go through Touch ID rather than Face ID.

Behind this innovation, a very important actor: General Interface Solution (GIS). This Taiwanese company provides components related to ultra -fine glass (UTG) which covers the foldable screen, a delicate material to produce but crucial for the sustainability of the device.

Apple would not only bet on the iPhone. According to Kuo, a folding iPad would be created in 2028. Its production volumes would however remain modest: between 500,000 and a million units, a figure which reflects the great prudence of the brand. The Price, which will be not surprised, could also limit the adoption of such a product.

Between these two launches, Apple would intercale another flagship device: a mixed reality headset more accessible than pro vision. Called “Vision Air”, this model would arrive in 2027 and weigh approximately 40 % less than the current one, a weight close to the 360 grams. Welcome lightening, as user feedback on the comfort of the pro vision pointed its tiring side in the long run (and it happened fairly quickly).

The price would also be revised downwards, around 2,000 euros, half less than the current price of the pro vision. This amount is obviously very high for ordinary people, but it could allow Apple to interest a slightly broader audience. The analyst estimates that the Air vision could reach one million copies sold in 2027, compared to around 400,000 units for pro vision.

The bet of these projects remains risky. The folding smartphones market remains a niche, and that of mixed reality headsets. Apple, accustomed to enter mature markets, this time chooses to push the lights of innovation upstream. It remains to be seen whether the brand will convince beyond its followers.
