The Freebox Ultra is no longer the only Free box with Wi-Fi 7. The operator, which has just launched an alarm system with Qiara, is integrating the latest generation of the wireless network into the fiber Freebox Pop optical. Accuracy is important and ADSL customers will always have to make do with the Wi-Fi 6 version.
Discover the Freebox Pop offer
The good news is that this move to Wi-Fi 7 is happening without any Price change. The Freebox Pop offer is still €29.99/month for the first year, then €39.99/month. With this new feature, the operator makes Wi-Fi 7 more accessible without overshadowing its premium Ultra offer. In fact, the Freebox Pop does not manage the 6 GHz band which provides higher speeds and lower latency. It is satisfied with dual-band Wi-Fi 7, that is to say on the classic 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands,
If the Freebox Ultra remains the queen of wireless speeds, this transition should not be minimized on the Freebox Pop. Provided you have compatible devices, the difference promises to be notable with Wi-Fi 7 which claims a theoretical speed of around 30 Gbit/s (up to 46 Gbit/s in reality) compared to 9.6 Gbit/s s for Wi-Fi 6. And in the absence of a price increase, we would be wrong to be choosy. In addition, the new Server Pop now includes an on/off button.
As a reminder, the Freebox Pop offer promises a maximum speed of up to 5 Gbit/s shared downstream. In upload (upload speed), Free offers up to 700 Mbit/s.
Free puts its competitors under pressure
With this new feature, Free is currently establishing itself in terms of Wi-Fi against its competitors. Orange and Bouygues Telecom offer at best a Wi-Fi 6E box while SFR limits itself to Wi-Fi 6. The historic operator even limits itself to Wi-Fi 5 on its basic offer at €42.99/month ( €24.99/month for 6 months or €39.99/month for the Special Series offer). Same observation at Sosh and Bouygues Telecom (Bbox Fit)… or even Free with the Freebox Revolution.
At Free, we remember that the Freebox Pop began its career with Wi-Fi 5 in 2020. The operator proposed an update in 2022, launching a Wi-Fi 6 version.
