If you ever wanted your long documents could just read themselves aloud, then Google has actually heard you! Gemini in Google Docs is rolling out a new feature that lets your documents speak. It’s designed to help with proofreading or better information absorption.

How does it work? On the web version of Google Docs, you’ll now find a new Audio option under the Tools menu. Selecting “Listen to this tab” brings up a floating player that you can move around your screen. The player includes basic controls like play/pause and a scrubber, along with options to adjust playback speed.

In a blog post, Google has mentioned that you will get a range of natural-sounding voice styles to choose from, such as  Narrator, Educator, Teacher, Persuader, and more. This will help you have a customised listening experience based on the type of document’s content.

Google Docs Audio Feature: How To Enable It?

Authors, the creators of the document, can add an Audio button anywhere in their document via the Insert menu. This button allows anyone with access to the file to play an audio version instantly. The button itself can be customised with different labels, sizes, and colours. On the other hand, the readers can activate the “Audio” feature directly from the Tools menu. But will you all get it?

Google Docs Audio Feature Availability And Plans

It must be noted that the feature is only available in English and only on desktop for now. It’s accessible to users with specific Google Workspace and Gemini subscriptions, including:

  • Business Standard and Plus
  • Enterprise Standard and Plus
  • Gemini Education and Education Premium add-ons
  • Gemini Business and Enterprise add-ons
  • Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers

If you haven’t received the feature yet, then it could be coming in a few weeks, as Google has already started rolling it out. Meanwhile, Android users of Google Docs will also see image generation rolling out under Gemini for AI Pro and Ultra plans.
