One prompt. Two minutes of research. $419.20 saved on a single purchase. Thanks, Gemini.

I was ready to click buy and spend over two grand on a fancy fitness machine, but the price just seemed excessive. I love a good deal and always try to negotiate when buying big-ticket items, but you can’t negotiate with a website. Or can you?

I turned to my good friend Gemini and asked if it knew any tricks I could use to save money on my purchase, and it delivered. It gave me a few good ones, one of which worked right away.

Has an AI chatbot ever helped you save money?

How Gemini saved me money

Those of you who have been following my work know I’ve been on a fitness journey for several months now. It all started back in October when I asked Gemini to help me get a six-pack. I was very pleased with the initial results, though things turned for the worse a few months in when Gemini went from a top-notch fitness coach to a distraction, forgetting my training plan and diet preferences.

Lesson learned. I started fresh, and Gemini and I are on good terms again. The AI advised that I’d be able to reach my goals faster with better equipment, so as a tech nerd, I set my sights on a smart home gym that uses digital weight to create resistance.

But there was a problem. The model I wanted was over $4,000 in my region. I asked Gemini to list cheaper alternatives, and out of the five it suggested, I found a favorite. The price was more reasonable at a little over $2,300 with shipping, but that’s still a significant investment.

I really wanted to get it under two grand, but I also wanted to buy it immediately — waiting for a Black Friday sale didn’t sit well with me. So, I asked Gemini for advice on how to save money now, and it quickly listed a few options.

The AI explained that I should never pay full price for a machine like this. It noted that fitness companies frequently work with influencers, sending them review units and providing discount codes to share with their followers.

These codes typically range from 5% to as much as 20% off — a hefty discount on a $2,300 product. Gemini suggested I check YouTube reviews for the product, specifically focusing on the most recent uploads, and look in the description for a code.

It was the easiest money I’ve ever saved. There was a discount code in the description of the second video I found. I didn’t even have to watch the video; the code was visible right next to the thumbnail. I punched it in at checkout and dropped the price by 20%, translating to a discount of exactly $419.20.

Thanks for the reminder, Gemini

To be honest, I was already aware of influencer discounts. They exist in the tech world, the fitness world, and countless other sectors. However, it didn’t even cross my mind when I was in “buying mode.” My mind drew a blank, but luckily, AI was there to assist.

Gemini also gave me a few extra tips worth trying next time, especially if a discount code isn’t readily available. The biggest one is the “Abandon Cart” strategy.

Companies have automated systems set up to send a discount code to users who bail at the last minute.

The idea is simple: you add a product to your shopping cart, fill out all your details — including your email address — and then close the tab. Many companies have automated systems set up to send a discount code to users who bail at the last minute. It’s a classic sales strategy designed to win back a customer who decided not to buy last minute.

I didn’t need to use this method since the influencer code worked, but I have experienced it with other products. It usually takes around 24 hours for the discount to arrive via email, though not every company uses this tactic.

I’ve also noticed a similar trick when canceling online subscriptions. When I’ve canceled services like Audible or HBO citing “too expensive” as the reason, I instantly received retention offers — sometimes even 50% off for the next three months.

This is what AI is all about

It’s easy to replace doomscrolling with an AI chatbot, something my colleague Andrew wrote about recently. I try to keep that in mind and use AI for things that add real value to my life.

I’m already impressed by how much time Gemini has saved me. Research that used to take hours can now be handled in minutes. Thanks to tools like Guided Learning, I can also learn new topics faster and easier. Now, I can add another benefit to the list: saving me money.

Since I use Gemini so much, I subscribe to the Google AI Pro plan, which also gets me 2TB of cloud storage. It costs $19.99 per month. With the $419.20 Gemini saved me on this single purchase, I’ve effectively paid for nearly 21 months of my subscription. Not bad for less than five minutes of work.
