GitHub to Azure: less independence, more capacity

Microsoft will migrate GitHub data centers to Azure in the coming months in what will be one of the most relevant moves since the Redmond firm bought the collaborative development platform for $7.5 billion.

When Microsoft bought GitHub He promised that the forge would continue to operate independently. It was the response to the concern generated in some sectors due to the change of ownership and not just anyone’s, since it was the largest software giant in the world. However, although some projects from the site were removed, they were not representative and GitHub remains today the most important platform in the world for collaboration of open source projects.

According to The Verge, Vladimir Fedorov, GitHub’s CTO, made an internal announcement earlier this week, citing a major capacity issue. In a note to employees, Fedorov wrote that GitHub has “limited capacity on their data servers and little possibility of increasing it in the Northern Virginia region”.

Fedorov called the migration from GitHub to Azure as “existential for GitHub to have the ability to scale to meet the demands of AI and Copilot”adding that this huge infrastructure project will require teams to delay the release of new features in favor of focusing on migration.

GitHub COO Kyle Daigle confirmed the migration: «GitHub will migrate to Azure in the next 24 months because we believe it is the right decision for our community and our teams. “We need to scale faster to meet the explosive growth of developer activity and AI-based workflows, and our current infrastructure is reaching its limit.”.

GitHub a Azure

The departure of the company to start a new venture of the former CEO of GitHub, Thomas Dohmke, already indicated that changes were coming to the platform. Rather than name a replacement, Microsoft is integrating GitHub and its leadership team into the newly created CoreAI group.

Microsoft’s senior management supports the plan. “CoreAI and Azure are mobilizing to provide us with the capacity and everything necessary to free ourselves”. The team hopes to finish most of the work next year and be completely out of its own data centers within 24 months.

Azure servers will offer greater capacity to support the large number of hosted projects, but GitHub will be less independent. Or put another way, totally dependent on the matrix.
