GNOME Shell 50.1 and Mutter 50.1 were released today as the first point releases in the GNOME 50 series.
Making Mutter 50.1 noteworthy is bringing a fix for a performance regression experienced with some NVIDIA graphics driver versions. The fix is a revert to a patch that had removed the META_DEADLINE_TIMER_STATE_INHIBITED usage but it turned out to cause performance issues with at least some NVIDIA driver versions. This bug report was reporting GNOME 50 having stuttering issues when using the latest NVIDIA R595 driver version. This performance was worse than prior to GNOME 50.
Also on the NVIDIA side is fixing a possible freeze. Mutter 50 freezes and deadlocks were reported with NVIDIA graphics while now Michel Dänzer has fixed that for Mutter 50.1.
Mutter 50.1 also brings a fix to apply Pango scale attributes to text, a fix to move minimized maximized windows to a different monitor, using fewer buffers for screencast streams, and other fixes.
The list of Mutter 50.1 changes in full can be found via this commit.
Also out today is GNOME Shell 50.1 with better fitting the on-screen keyboard on very small screens, enabling the network agent on the lock screen, basic zoom support for the captive portal, and a memory leak fix.
Expect the formal GNOME 50.1 point release to be announced soon.
