Google Meet Comes to Android Auto Following Apple CarPlay Launch

Google Meet is now available on Android Auto, a few weeks after being introduced on Apple CarPlay. If you’ve got a compatible car and Android phone, and a connection between the two, you should see the option soon.

Meet for Android Auto began appearing in the last few days, with Android Authority spotting it on a device before noticing changes to Google’s support pages explaining how it works. It’s similar to CarPlay integration, prioritizing safety during calls while driving.

There’s no video here with what Google calls On-the-Go mode, which it says provides “a simplified, audio-focused experience designed to reduce distractions.”

You won’t see or share video, so you’ll appear to have your feed turned off for everyone on the call. Other features, such as joining a scheduled call, ringing a specific person or group, or muting yourself, remain, but more advanced features don’t.

Google recommends parking your car safely and using the Meet app on your phone to access features such as hand raising, questions and answers, polls, and text chat.

The other big change is that meetings will start immediately through Android Auto. The pre-call screen you’ve grown used to seeing in standard versions of Meet, which some use to prepare and check their settings before a call, won’t appear.

To use Meet in your vehicle, you need a vehicle that supports Android Auto, an up-to-date version of the app, and a connection between your device and your vehicle, which can be through Bluetooth or a USB cable.

Google introduced Meet features for CarPlay in early April. It said the feature should be available to all compatible iPhone users by the end of this week. Google hasn’t shared how long the Android Auto rollout will take, but expect the features to appear in your app soon.
