Have you had trouble accessing SoundCloud recently? The music-streaming platform has confirmed that connectivity issues are likely due to a breach of its systems.

“SoundCloud recently detected unauthorized activity in an ancillary service dashboard,” it said in a statement. After that activity was contained, however, SoundCloud was also hit with denial-of-service attacks, two of which temporarily disabled the web version.

“A purported threat actor group accessed certain limited data that we hold,” SoundCloud says, but sensitive data was not compromised. “The data involved consisted only of email addresses and information already visible on public SoundCloud profiles and affected approximately 20% of SoundCloud users.”

That’s likely tens of millions of people as the streamer is estimated to have over 140 million users, according to Priori Data. SoundCloud allows you to add a location to your public profile, such as a city, state, or country.

In response, SoundCloud says it has enhanced its monitoring and threat detection, reviewed and reinforced identity and access controls, and audited related systems.

“As part of these updates, some configuration changes have caused some users on VPNs to experience temporary connectivity issues,” it adds. “We are actively working to resolve these VPN-related access issues.”

It’s unclear whether the brand will be contacting affected users, but for the time being, you should act as if you are impacted. Be extra vigilant about messages sent to the email address you use for SoundCloud, as you may see an increase in phishing attempts.
