The Renault Clio has established itself as the best-selling car of 2025 in France, with a comfortable lead over its competitors. A clear domination, almost old-school, at a time when the industry is multiplying technological breakthroughs and tax arbitrages.

A local market in crisis

The French market is still far from its pre-crisis volumes, between rising prices, purchasing power under pressure and hesitation around engines. In this uncertain landscape, motorists have favored known, proven, and rather reasonable values in terms of cost of use. The Clio ticks all these boxes, which largely explains its return to the lead, and the surprisingly wide gap it has opened up with its rivals.

Top 5 most registered vehicles in 2025 in France

  1. Renault Clio V (~103,672 units)
  2. Peugeot 208 II (~77,528 units)
  3. Dacia Sandero III (~59,892 units)
  4. Citroën C3 IV (~55,810 units)
  5. Peugeot 2008 II (~46,000+ units)

Renault’s city car stood out for its versatility, its availability in several engines and its Price positioning which is more understandable than that of many more recent models. Where certain new products had to deal with delays or range decisions, the Clio played the card of continuity, supported by a solid network and an image very anchored in the daily lives of French motorists.

Behind it, the Peugeot 208 remained in second position, but at a respectable distance, while the Dacia Sandero confirmed its role as an anti-crisis model, still supported by a price/service ratio that is difficult to compete with. The Citroën C3 and the Peugeot 2008 complete the top of the ranking, proof that versatile city cars and small SUVs remain the heart of the French market.

Electricity continues to progress

Zero-emission models are gaining market share, in particular thanks to new compact offers and the arrival of more affordable vehicles (+195% for BYD). But in 2025, they have not yet supplanted the thermal and hybrid best-sellers, perceived more as a stable compromise in a period of energy transition that is still unclear for many buyers.

For manufacturers, the year confirms a fairly clear lesson: the most installed models, well identified and easy to understand in terms of use and total cost, remain those which best resist economic turbulence. By regaining first place so clearly, the Clio reminds us that trust, even more than innovation, remains one of the most powerful drivers of the French automobile market.
