As tensions rise between India and Pakistan, the digital battlefield has become critical as well.. Reports of cyberattacks have been coming up and hackers and millions of Indian citizens, businesses, and critical sectors like banking are exposed to online threats. Digital Platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram are being used to send malicious messages to hack into confidential information of Indian citizens.

In response, India’s cybersecurity agencies have raised alarms and Indian banks have also increased their security and are taking enhanced security measures at branches located near the border regions.

Cyberattacks are becoming a serious threat. A new, devastating malware called the “Dance of the Hillary” virus is spreading rapidly. This particular malware is being spread in the form of documents and video files on digital platforms. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has also issued a warning to market participants, urging extra caution in the face of this escalating digital warfare. With major online platforms being targeted, the need for individuals and businesses to take preventive steps has never been more critical.

Here are some crucial steps that you can take to protect your personal and professional data from these evolving cyber threats:

Use Strong Passwords

A basic way is to use strong passwords by using a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid reusing passwords across multiple accounts. A password manager can help you keep track of them.

Disable Auto Download on WhatsApp

As cyberattacks become more creative, with attackers sending files that may contain malware, the best defense is to avoid direct downloads. Whenever you receive a file from an unknown number, it’s crucial to verify the file before downloading it.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Make sure that you Activate 2FA on all accounts for an added layer of security. This means even if someone knows your password, they won’t be able to log in without the special code sent to your phone or email.

Activate Advanced Protection

Meta offers a hidden setting for your account. It’s simple to enable in the Privacy and Security section. It’s called “Advanced Protection” and will give you an extra layer of security. Although the government has blocked all Pakistani accounts, many are still accessible on other platforms like Threads. Make sure not to click on any unknown links.

Keep Your Devices and Apps Updated

Regular updates fix vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit. Ensure your devices, apps, and antivirus software are up-to-date to prevent malware from breaching your system.

While Indian banks and the government are working tirelessly to combat these threats, make sure that as an individual, you safeguard your online presence. As digital warfare intensifies, staying informed and proactive about cybersecurity is your best defense.
