According to digital blogger @Digital Chat Station, Huawei’s upcoming Mate 80 series is expected to be the only domestic flagship smartphone launching this year with variable aperture technology. This technology physically adjusts the aperture diameter to control the amount of incoming light, allowing the camera to better adapt to low-light conditions, motion shots, and group photos. Leaks suggest that the Mate 80 series will be equipped with a 50MP 1/1.28″± large main sensor, a physical variable aperture, and a custom camera module. Huawei has already introduced variable aperture in select models across its Mate, Pura, and Nova lineups, but rival Chinese brands have yet to adopt the technology in their upcoming flagships. Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly developing its own version of variable aperture, which could debut in the iPhone 18 series in 2026. [IThome, in Chinese]
