Sometimes I just need a free movie to feel alive again, and to cut down on the always-rising cost of streaming services. Luckily for everyone, Tubi actually has a surprising number of quality movies on offer.
It may have come out back in 2021, but Godzilla vs. Kong is the kind of big-budget fare that you’d expect to find on a premium service. The film is a pivotal moment for the Monsterverse, seeing the eponymous monsters duke it out on the big screen for the first time. While the writing isn’t anything to, well, write home about, if you’re here for the spectacle, then spectacle you will get in spades.
Godzilla vs. Kong is definitely one of the biggest offerings available on Tubi, and even if it’s not something you’d normally watch, it’s hard to pass up on free. Alternatively, it’s a decent way to get caught up if you’ve fallen behind on the Monsterverse.
Just because the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has gone the way of the dinosaur–replaced by James Gunn’s DC Universe (DCU)–doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy its final offering: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. It’s not exactly a high note for the DCEU to bow out on, but the sequel to Aquaman does have its charmingly fun moments regardless.
Speaking of, you can also stream the first Aquaman on Tubi if you’re feeling a slightly superior viewing. Still, for a film that only came out in 2023, finding Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom for free on Tubi is quite a big deal.
We’re going to travel back in time a bit for this one, all the way back to 2001 for Evolution. David Duchovny was still riding that post-The X-Files popularity train, and Seann William Scott was still enjoying his fame from American Pie. You throw in some other notable cast members like Julianne Moore and Orlando Jones, and you have a solid recipe for a fun science fiction comedy film brought to you by Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman.
The end result isn’t exactly comedy brilliance, but it’s still an incredibly fun, diverting experience that I could not believe was just hanging around on Tubi, free of charge. If you’re looking for a fun nostalgia trip or a look at what ’00s era comedy was like, you could do a lot worse than Evolution.
Originally released in 2013, this isn’t exactly a new movie; it was still shocking for me to find The Wolf of Wall Street just sitting on Tubi, available to watch for free. The crime comedy, directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is still just as ludicrously entertaining and objectionable as it was during its controversy-laden release.
If anything, time has just made the pros and cons of The Wolf of Wall Street all the more apparent. But if you’re looking for some fantastic performances from DiCaprio and costar Jonah Hill, this is truly a great way to spend three hours. If it’s your first time, however, just don’t go in expecting to relate to any of these characters.
Perhaps one of the most surprisingly beautiful films of the year 2015, Straight Outta Compton is a biographical drama showcasing the rise and inevitable fall of the hip-hop group N.W.A. The performances are top-notch, and it somehow elevates a lot of the biopic tropes due mostly to the strength of its cast. Chief among these performances is O’Shea Jackson Jr. stepping into the role of his real-life dad, Ice Cube, and Jason Mitchell’s devastating turn as Eazy-E.
It’s easily one of the best biopics around, so if you missed it when it first dropped, there’s no better time than now to finally sit down and experience it for free on Tubi. Still kind of blows my mind that it’s on there, to be honest. It’s also much better than other hip-hop-related biopics like All Eyez on Me and Notorious. Straight Outta Compton is absolutely worth the two-and-a-half-hour investment.
Let’s bookend this list with two completely ridiculous monster movies. This time around, it’s The Meg, starring action film connoisseur Jason Statham as he takes on a giant, definitely extinct shark (no, for real) called the megalodon. It’s the type of movie you’d expect to find on a free streaming service like Tubi, only it carries a hefty budget, somewhere around $150 million.
It’s pure B-movie joy, and at no point does it take itself any more seriously than the silly premise would suggest. Statham hams it up as a rescue diver who somehow gets to fight a giant shark, and yes, you’ll need to suspend a ton of disbelief to buy into that. But honestly, it delivers exactly what’s on the box. No more, no less.
Hopefully, these films, and many more, will offer a nice waste of time while you’ve got it to kill. Of course, if you’re looking for other free movie streaming sites, we have you completely covered there, too.
