Indian authorities and the central bank are negotiating with Ant International to link the country’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the digital payment platform Alipay+, Reuters reported citing sources familiar with the matter.
The technical integration aims to optimize the cross-border payment experience. If the partnership is finalized, Indian travelers would be able to use their domestic UPI apps to make payments at global merchants that support Alipay+.
Sources noted that a final decision is subject to security reviews to ensure the safety of digital infrastructure and data. As of now, India’s Ministry of Finance, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and Ant International have not immediately responded to requests for comment. [Reuters]
