Intel Panther Lake / Arc B390 Linux Benchmarks Still Coming

Ahead of tomorrow’s official availability of new Intel Core Ultra Series 3 “Panther Lake” laptops, the review embargo lifted on Panther Lake and its much anticipated Arc B390 graphics. There have been several Windows 11 reviews of Panther Lake out today, but what about Linux?

Linux performance benchmarks of Intel Panther Lake as well as support/compatibility details are still coming. While Intel talked recently of sending out a Panther Lake laptop for review at Phoronix, so far I haven’t seen any device nor received any further information if it’s happening or not. But as noted earlier this month, given that likelihood earlier this month I pre-ordered a Panther Lake laptop for Linux testing. That MSI Prestige 14 Flip AI+ Evo OLED “PRESTIGE 14 FLIP AI+ D3MTG-001US” pre-order hasn’t shipped yet but I am holding out hope that it ends up shipping out today or otherwise tomorrow… B&H just still refers to it as coming soon, but hoping I have good luck like in the past pre-order Intel laptop launches with them. After that I should have the laptop in a day or two. With already re-testing numerous Intel Core and AMD Ryzen laptops on the latest upstream Linux software packages, if the laptop ships out soon I’ll have out preliminary Panther Lake Linux data by the end of the week.

Panther Lake pre-order

The MSI Prestige 14 Flip AI+ Evo is with the Core Ultra X7 358H comprised of 16 cores between 4 P cores, 8 E cores, and 4 LPE cores. The Intel Core Ultra X7 358H does have the Arc B390 GPU with 12 Xe cores. The reviews out today have been with the flagship Panther Lake Intel Core Ultra X9 388H model that has the same core count but with a 5.1GHz turbo frequency compared to 4.8GHz turbo frequency with the 358H. Similarly, lower max turbo frequencies on the E cores as well as for the base frequencies. Hopefully Intel ends up still shipping out a Panther Lake laptop for Linux review at Phoronix as presumably it would be of the flagship Core Ultra X9 388H configuration. At least with the X7 358H is still the 12 Xe core B390 GPU configuration.

But long story short for those that have been emailing me today about Panther Lake on Linux after seeing the initial Windows reviews… It’s still coming. With the other laptops re-tested already, working to turn out some Panther Lake Linux performance data quickly once having my hands on hardware — and assuming no Linux quirks or unforeseen compatibility issues. Stay tuned. And for those that appreciate or are interested in Panther Lake data on Linux, joining Phoronix Premium is the best way to show your support especially in times like this when needing to resort to buying hardware to be able to provide Linux reviews and performance data.
