A new leak has indicated that Motorola could be working on a new foldable design that would put the company in direct competition with Samsung and, potentially, Apple.

Motorola has only ever used a clamshell design for its foldable phones, like the Motorola Razr 2025 series. However, known leaker Evan Blass shared a screenshot on X of what appears to be a slide from an internal Lenovo meeting, which states that the company is working on a new book-style product for release. For reference, Lenovo purchased the Motorola Mobility brand, which includes Moto smartphones, back in 2014.

According to the slide, seen above, Motorola could soon preview the Razr Fold, stating that it’s the company’s “first in the fold form factor.” While there are no specific hardware details, it does mention that the phone will include “brilliant displays, Intelligent AI, and an advanced, boundary-breaking camera system.” The slide also explains that more details will be revealed in the coming months, with a planned release later this year.

Motorola’s potential release of a new book-like foldable phone is certainly interesting news, but the company will face some big challenges in 2026.

For one thing, Samsung is reportedly aiming to release the Galaxy Z Fold 8 this year. While we don’t have any solid information about the next Samsung foldable, there are rumors that the company will use a new drilling technology to remove the crease on the main screen and increase the battery capacity at long last to improve on the already excellent Galaxy Z Fold 7.

That alone would be a challenge for a new foldable to compete against, but there is one other predicted shakeup in the foldable market in 2026: the iPhone Fold. While Apple is still keeping even the existence of the phone under wraps, we have seen rumors that the phone will not feature a crease at all on its 7.8-inch main display, as well as a 24MP under-display camera and potentially Apple’s first 2nm chip, the A20 Pro.

So the big question is: what can Motorola do to separate itself from the competition when it comes to the best foldables of 2026? One potential avenue that Motorola could exploit is the price, especially considering the extortionate £2,399 price rumored for the iPhone Fold, However, gauging the price of any new phone is difficult at the moment due to the RAM shortage that is causing turmoil in the market.

In our review of the Motorola Razr Ultra 2025, we praised Motorola’s custom UI that helped to integrate Moto AI and other AI assistants into a streamlined experience, which is unique among other flip foldables. The leaked slide mentions improved AI, but that could mean a lot of different things for the Razr Fold’s capabilities.

A slide from an internal presentation does not guarantee an upcoming launch, as there are a lot of things that could change in the coming months. However, CES 2026 is currently underway, so we might hear more sooner rather than later.
