UPDATE: X seems to have restored access to both the site and app. Data from Downdetector suggests the outage lasted for over an hour.
Original story:
Having trouble with X? The social media platform formerly known as Twitter appears to be suffering an outage that’s preventing tweets from loading.
The problems first appeared on Friday morning when X.com and the app failed to retrieve new tweets. If you try to refresh the page, it says: “Cannot retrieve posts at this time. Please try again later.” As a result, the timeline on the X app seems to remain static.
According to Downdector.com, users began reporting access problems around 10 a.m. EST. Reports quickly surged to almost 185,000 in the US thus far, followed by Japan with 129,406. Top affected cities include Tokyo, New York City, Osaka, Chicago, and Yokohama.

For some, the X.com domain is only showing a black screen and the X logo. In other cases, we’ve seen an error page from Cloudflare, the internet infrastructure provider, that says, “Connection timed out,” indicating it failed to establish a connection to the host, X.com.

Your mileage may vary. Outage reports on Downdetector.com briefly declined before shooting back up again. But we’re also seeing a few new tweets on the X app when we repeatedly refresh. X didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. In the meantime, people are posting about the X outage on rival sites.

Downdetector also shows that Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot is down. We were still able to access Grok.com, but the chatbot is struggling to respond, showing an error message that it’s either under heavy load or simply the phrase “No response.”

Experience
I’ve been a journalist for over 15 years. I got my start as a schools and cities reporter in Kansas City and joined PCMag in 2017, where I cover satellite internet services, cybersecurity, PC hardware, and more. I’m currently based in San Francisco, but previously spent over five years in China, covering the country’s technology sector.
Since 2020, I’ve covered the launch and explosive growth of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service, writing 600+ stories on availability and feature launches, but also the regulatory battles over the expansion of satellite constellations, fights with rival providers like AST SpaceMobile and Amazon, and the effort to expand into satellite-based mobile service. I’ve combed through FCC filings for the latest news and driven to remote corners of California to test Starlink’s cellular service.
I also cover cyber threats, from ransomware gangs to the emergence of AI-based malware. Earlier this year, the FTC forced Avast to pay consumers $16.5 million for secretly harvesting and selling their personal information to third-party clients, as revealed in my joint investigation with Motherboard.
I also cover the PC graphics card market. Pandemic-era shortages led me to camp out in front of a Best Buy to get an RTX 3000. I’m now following how President Trump’s tariffs will affect the industry. I’m always eager to learn more, so please jump in the comments with feedback and send me tips.
