“It’s catastrophic” Why Apple’s MacBook Neo is already worrying the entire PC market

We expected a cheap laptop, but certainly not in this form. At the beginning of March, Apple unveiled its new MacBook, the Neo, after months of rumors. Priced at €699, it is at the entry level, but with a technical sheet close to the most efficient laptops.

Equipped with the A18 Pro chip from the 2024 iPhone 16 Pro, the MacBook Neo is certainly designed for office automation, but it has capabilities allowing it to present itself as a real competitor to computers from Lenovo, Dell, HP or even Asus. It was also the co-CEO of the Taiwanese brand, SY Hsu, who spoke about the Neo. And he’s not confident at all.

“In the past, Apple’s pricing policy has always been high, so the fact that they are releasing a very affordable product is obviously a shock to the entire industry”, confides Mr. Hsu. According to him, the arrival of such an affordable Mac represents a real threat to the Windows PC market, until now the majority compared to Macs.

“Across the PC ecosystem, there has been a lot of discussion about how to compete with this product”he adds, referring to the many rumors that speak of a low-cost MacBook for several years. The first information mentioning the MacBook Neo dates back, in fact, to the end of 2023.

Des technologies “premium”

It must be said that Apple has all the cards in its hands to compete with Windows PCs. Equipped with a proven in-house chip, the MacBook Neo incorporates many technologies from more expensive Macs renowned for their performance within the industry. The first reviews of the device are starting to come out, and we must admit that we are dealing with a completely respectable machine for this Price.

The MacBook Neo could sell millions of units in a PC industry under pressure following a memory shortage. Ming-Chi Kuo, a famous analyst specializing in Apple, predicts between 4.5 and 5 million units sold in 2026.

However, the co-president of Asus says he is confident in one aspect: the device’s memory. The MacBook Neo has only 8GB of unified, non-scalable memory, which makes it inefficient in the long term and, in particular, for content creation. “It’s more of a content consumption device. It’s different from using a traditional laptop.” We reassure ourselves as best we can…
