Released three months ago was the first AerynOS ISO release for that Linux distribution led by Ikey Doherty and from there plans were laid to provide “accelerated delivery of milestone ISOs.” But now Q2 is ending without any further announcements from this interesting Linux distribution formerly known as SerpentOS.

After many announcements over the course of Q1, SerpentOS now known as AerynOS had been making some interesting improvements as they built out their own Rust-based infrastructure and package management and more. Now being three months since their last announcement and ISO release, I was curious what was going on but sadly not much this quarter.

AerynOS

There haven’t been any project blog posts or ISO releases since the 2025.03 alpha. Via the GitHub discussions area for AerynOS have shown some ongoing activity by contributors working on packaging for AerynOS and related work. Along with answering questions like AerynOS developers expressing no plans for packaging XLibre.

The latest status update on GitHub by developer Rune Morling is on working out more build infrastructure in Rust rather than their previous D language based tooling.

Ikey GitHub activity

A main factor in the lack of visible AerynOS news is the lack of activity from Ikey Doherty. He hasn’t been active at all on GitHub since April. A few weeks ago a Phoronix reader had contacted me about his lack of activity and that he may be out camping in the wilderness without Internet connectivity but in any event it’s now been the better part of three months since he’s been active on GitHub or other AerynOS communication channels.

In any event here’s to hopefully hearing more out of AerynOS in the second half of the year and back onto their driving new innovations into the Linux distribution world.
