The biggest issue for the Chiefs is their cap space.
Kansas City has $15 million to spend over the offseason and could potentially lose some big players in the process.
The issue is, they might not have the money to sign or resign players due to how much they are paying a minority of the team.
Just five players on the Chiefs are accounting for 66 percent of the team’s cap space. Four of those players are on offense.
Patrick Mahomes is the biggest cap hit, accounting for $66.3 million in 2025.
Jawaan Taylor and Joe Thuney are also taking huge paychecks on the offensive line.
They are earning $27.4 and $27 million respectively.
Travis Kelce also has a massive cap hit for the tight end position. He is earning $19.8 million.
On the defense, Chris Jones has a monstrous $34.8 million cap hit.
All together, those five players are worth $175 million.
The Chiefs have some major players hitting free agency this offseason, and it might not be possible for them to resign any of them with this cap situation.
Safety Justin Reid is among those players. Reid has spent the last three seasons with the Chiefs, starting every game he has played in.
He will be just 28 years old next season, but could find himself in a new city.
Right guard Trey Smith is perhaps the biggest name that could leave the Chiefs.
Smith was drafted in 2021 and has blossomed into a star on the offensive line with the Chiefs.

He is expected to get a massive contract in the offseason, and it likely won’t be with the Chiefs.
So what can be done to remedy this situation?
The Chiefs will likely have to cut some players to get rid of their salaries, and one of those players could be Travis Kelce.
He is contemplating retirement, and if he leaves the league he would save the Chiefs almost $20 million.
