macOS 26.1 beta 3 changes polarizing Macintosh HD icon – 9to5Mac

It turns out Apple TV isn’t the only new icon in today’s 26.1 beta 3 OS releases. Remember the controversial hard drive icon in macOS Tahoe from over the summer? Apple shipped the design, but it looks like a new version is coming after all.

macOS Tahoe 26 includes the Liquid Glass redesign and updated icon set that iOS 26 and other Apple platforms deliver this year.

Apple took the opportunity to update the classic hard disk drive for the Macintosh HD icon to one that more accurately resembles the solid state drives used in modern Macs.

However, Mac users took issue with a few details.

First, the perspective of the Apple logo and the drive angle didn’t make much sense. Second, the drive icon also featured a random port and holes.

The drive icon also looks more like an external SSD and not the flash storage chip used in computers, but that’s acceptable for an icon.

Apple seems to have taken that feedback to heart with the new Macintosh HD icon in macOS 26.1 Tahoe. This is the version included in today’s beta 3 release:
