BRITS could be in for another sky show tonight as the Northern Lights are set to light up parts of the UK for a second night running.

The Met Office has released a video displaying a map showing the areas most likely to be blessed with the rare sighting.

Last night Cornwall was surprised with an incredible show of the Northern Lights, which is usually seen in the Arctic Circle.

Elsewhere Scotland and parts of northern England saw the colourful illuminations across their skies.

But the Met Office forecast predicts the dazzling aurora sightings are possible in northern Britain again tonight.

They add that some southern areas could be treated with the vivid spectacle depending on cloud cover.

FLARED UP

Blackout warning issued over powerful solar storm – and chance of NORTHERN LIGHTS

A fast moving coronal mass ejection (CME) means the aurora display could be spotted overnight.

The Met Office says: “The arrival time of the CME is uncertain, but aurora sightings are possible in northern Britain and perhaps in southern areas depending on cloud cover.”

They added: “A coronal mass ejection is expected to arrive on 20 January, which is likely to give a G3/ Strong Storm, with the chance of seeing aurora down to mid-latitudes, depending on exact timing of the CME arrival.”

The displays are caused by charged particles from the Sun colliding with gases in the Earth‘s atmosphere around the magnetic poles.

Ordinarily, most of the UK is too far south to see the northern lights with the naked eye.

But hope remains that if you missed the displays last night you will get another chance this evening.

Where and when to see the Northern Lights

Scotland: Those in the northern Highlands and Islands have the highest chance of seeing the lights clearly due to their latitude.

The rest of Scotland may also be able to sight the aurora.

Northern England and Northern Ireland: Here the chance is more likely than usual.

Regions like the Antrim Coast and the Lake District could see some glowing lights.

Wales and the rest of England: The rest of the country is unlikely to see a large amount of visible activity in the sky overnight.

If the storm is extremely severe, it may be possible to catch the aurora in some areas.

Some clouds are forecast across Britain, so you may need to be patient for a patch of clear sky.
