Microsoft has published a video that seems to be the first of a series entitled «Vision Windows 2030», where the company advances How do you see the operating system for the next decade. The quick reading to start is that if you do not like artificial intelligence to control everything, you will not like the ‘Windows of the future’.

Artificial intelligence has reached the technological market with unusual force and it seems that you are nobody if you do not put your products the ‘ia’ label. And this although the perception of users and companies does not see the advantages that marketing departments promise. Nor are hot issues such as the increase in resources consumption, the prices, the affectation to employment, the privacy of the data or entering the Windows field, simply that Microsoft imposes its own applications and services (as it currently does) without leaving room for the user to choose the functions of the third parties that prefer.

But the road map is marked. Microsoft wants to make its millionaire investment in artificial intelligence technologies and its deployment will be massive. Also in Windows. The company believes that AI will play a key role in its operating systems. Not only will it be fundamental, but The entire code will be created around AI.

Windows 2030

Microsoft’s corporate vice president David Weston has been in charge of showing the Windows of the future or the vision that Microsoft has of it. The Executive starts the video as an interview with a whole declaration of intentions: “The use of the keyboard and mouse will feel as strange as it is for the generation Z use ms-dos”.

Weston bets on the natural language as a predetermined interaction method with the operating system. And goes further, hinting at the possibility of a new and radical user experience (UX) of desktop: «I firmly believe that future versions of Windows and other Microsoft operating systems will interact multimodal. The computer can see what we see, hear what we hear, and we can talk to it and ask him to do much more sophisticated things ».

This will be possible thanks to the AI agents, the revolution of the Revolution in Artificial Intelligence that the Executive predicts will take care of the “hard” work, which will allow humans to concentrate on more interesting and creative tasks. Or that is the theory with which they try to convince us, because the affectation of AI on world employment is a problem of colossal dimensions. In spite of the huge income and benefits figures, layoffs in the templates in large technology are the order of the day.

The Executive firmly believes that future versions of Windows will interact in a form multimodal. “The computer can see what we see, hear what we hear, and we can talk to it and ask you to do much more sophisticated things”as a much more natural form of communication.

In the field of cybersecurity that is Weston’s specialty, he says Future security experts will be AI bots With those who will interact as if it were a real person, speaking with them in videos and meetings, or sending them emails to assign tasks.

What will the Windows of the future be like?

The Executive does not deepen the UX paradigm changes, but it seems that it is hinting on a future in which The AI agent will be the main orchestra of the Windows operating system, using natural language and user entry as a method to interact with your computer and applications. Microsoft had already hinted at this as the future of Windows. In the Build of 2023, the company described the ways in which it provided for the integration of AI in the software and detailed how AI would be integrated into the applications, next to them and outside them.

Of course, we have not yet seen an IA implemented outside applications. So far, each product of AI is a function or service that exists within another application or as an independent application. We have not yet seen a Complete platform built from zero with the integrated into an operating system where an intelligent agent is able to orchestrate all workflows in our name.

It seems, and we say it because all this is in diapers at least publicly, that Windows 2030 goes around. The recent wave of web browsers with AI, including the recently launched ‘Ia mode for Edge’ offers a first glance to how this could be, orchestrating workflows on multiple tabs and navigation sessions. That vision could be extended to an entire desktop operating system, managing applications and files instead of web tabs.

Going one step further, we would end up replacing the cursor with the voice and hence the comment to the keyboard and mouse. Instead of clicking manually on buttons and menus to complete tasks, you will simply ask Copilot to perform them for you. The CEO, Satyta Nadella, already hinted something similar: “The AI will radically change the essence of an operating system, the appearance of the user interface and the interaction between applications”.

Some sources indicate that beyond the “vision” commented by executives, in Redmond they launched a secret and concrete project to explore the future of Windows. Microsoft would have already created a functional code prototype that explores this paradigm shift in the user experience (UX) for computer desks.

Windows 2030

¿Windows 12? ¿Windows AI?

The Microsoft domain of the computer channel and the immense Windows market share, places the company in a privileged position to consolidate its AI in the lives of millions of people, since it can integrate it into Windows completely. OpenAi, Perpleplexity and other popular chatbots will always be confined to an application that the user must access, while an agency co -pilot assistant could go much further than a simple application on Windows; It could become Windows himself.

It is true that Windows needs a ‘revolution’, but until very recently it was not expected that the AI was the total and absolute center of the changes that are to come. Everything indicates that Windows inevitably addresses there, Like more or less. The same video that gives rise to Windows 2030 has more negative votes than positive and quite hurtful comments about Microsoft’s vision of its future operating systems.

And it is that the background does not invite optimism. The beginnings of AI in Windows 11 have failed to penetrate consumers and their integration is far from planned. The launch of Copilot promised that we would all be “more productive” and the truth is that it has not happened. Ambitions, promises and marketing around AI are very high, But transfer them to the real world is something else.

That said, we doubt that the Windows 2030 Jubile (in 2030) to keyboards and mice manufacturers, although it is true that the next evolution of agents and functions such as voice commands will be increasingly important to handle Windows. If you prefer another course, take advantage of the end of the Windows 10 life cycle to bet on alternative platforms because The Windows AI is underway.
