A MINECRAFT Movie is a runaway success, packing out cinemas across the globe.

But a massive viral phenomenon from the film is causing so much trouble it has even been banned — here’s what you need to know about the Chicken Jockey trend.

What is the Minecraft Chicken Jockey trend?

In the Minecraft video game, the Chicken Jockey is a rarely encountered spectacle — a baby zombie riding a chicken, accompanied by a humorous mob of big nosed, bushy eyebrowed followers.

The movie includes a memorable scene where Garrett “the Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa) faces off against the Chicken Jockey in a gladiator-style ring.

When doorknob salesman Steve (Jack Black) yells “Chicken Jockey!” in the movie, it triggers a wave of excitement among fans, particularly those familiar with the game’s inside jokes and mechanics.

How the trend started

The trend began after the movie’s trailer showcased the Chicken Jockey scene, resonating with Minecraft’s massive fanbase.

Anticipation built up online, especially on TikTok, where users began sharing memes and planning to reenact the moment in theaters.

The scene created a perfect storm for a viral trend, with fans eager to celebrate the moment together in public.

What the Chicken Jockey trend looks like in theaters

During screenings, when the chicken jockey appears, groups of fans have been:

  • Cheering loudly and shouting the phrase “Chicken Jockey!”
  • Throwing popcorn and drinks
  • Climbing onto each other’s shoulders to mimic the in-game aesthetics
  • Setting off fire extinguishers and even fireworks
  • In rare cases, bringing props or even live chickens to theaters

Some compare the atmosphere to cult classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, where audience participation becomes part of the event.

However, the Minecraft trend is often more chaotic and disruptive.

Why the Chicken Jockey trend has been banned in some cinemas

The trend has led to significant disruptions in cinemas worldwide, including:

  • Property damage: Reports of torn seats, spilled drinks and vandalism
  • Disturbance: Loud cheering, shouting and physical antics disrupting other viewers’ experiences
  • Safety concerns: Climbing on seats or each other, posing risks of injury, as well as fireworks being set off

As a result, a number of cinemas have responded by:

  • Banning unaccompanied minors from screenings
  • Issuing warnings that disruptive guests will be removed without refunds
  • Restricting concessions to prevent popcorn-throwing
  • In some cases, halting screenings or calling police when behavior has escalated

However, some theater managers appreciate the enthusiasm and ticket sales.

US chain Regal Cinemas even began promoting Chicken Jockey screenings, where such behavior is encouraged — minus the fireworks and other obvious safety hazards, such as climbing on shoulders.

But most agree the trend has gone too far, banning the trend and prioritizing the safety and enjoyment of all patrons.

The viral nature of the trend means it has spread quickly, prompting many cinemas around the world to adopt stricter policies until the excitement of the trend dies down.
