In an update earlier today, the 2024 iPad App of the Year, Moises, released an impressive feature called AI Studio. It takes a recording of a single instrument and generates other instruments that match the original beat and style. Here’s how it works.

Moises is hands-down one of the most impressive AI music apps in recent years

Last year, Apple chose the musical app Moises as iPad App of the Year, and with good reason.

Moises launched in 2020 and quickly became a go-to app for AI-powered instrument isolation. It lets musicians split “flattened” songs into separate tracks, helping you “focus on singing lead vocals, unleashing that guitar solo, or playing bass alongside your favorite band,” as described by the App Store editorial team.

Following its skyrocketing success and, a month after being named Apple’s 2024 iPad App of the Year, the company announced a $40M Series A investment round, led by monashees and Connected Ventures, which further raised its profile among music and AI enthusiasts alike.

Today, Moises announced an even more impressive feature than its AI-powered track isolation: AI Studio, which “creates individual instrumental parts (stems), such as a bassline or drum track, that automatically match the sound and style of a user’s recording.”

Here’s the company’s pitch of the feature:

“Acting like a responsive bandmate, AI Studio listens to your music and follows your creative cues. It can take something as simple as a piano chord progression or guitar riff, and generate basslines, drum parts, or other instruments that blend naturally with your recording’s sound, timing, harmony, and style. This lets musicians quickly experiment with ideas and arrangements, resulting in a stems-first approach to AI music generation. “

Moises says that its AI models were trained on high-quality individual instrument recordings, which is different from other platforms that allegedly train on complete songs.

The company says that its “context-aware” approach to AI training and product development can offer musicians more control during the creative process, helping them “shape every detail of their music exactly as they envision”.

AI Studio is available to Free, Premium, and Pro users on the Web and Desktop app. Each plan has a different monthly allowance of generative credits, with the option to purchase extra credits.
