Every week, Netflix drops a bunch of new content for viewers to stream from TV and movie studios all over the world. Watching all of it would take you a ton of time, so I decided to start my Friday by recommending three top picks for the weekend and week to come. Schedule your viewing around these shows and movies, and I’ll be watching along with you. The second week of August is a microcosm of everything that makes the streamer great: international content from India, Japan and more, coupled with homegrown stuff. Here’s what you should watch.

This Week on Netflix: PCMag’s Picks

Outlander: Season 7, Part 1 (Aug. 11)

This long-running Starz series has a very dedicated fan base, so you might want to catch up before diving into season 7. Outlander follows Claire Randall, a military nurse from the 20th century who gets transported back in time to the 1700s and gets embroiled in all kinds of intrigue through history. It’s visually rich, complex, and engrossing.

Saare Jahan Se Accha: The Silent Guardians (Aug. 13)

Indian film does pretty well on Netflix, so I’m curious how Indian TV will do. Saare Jahan Se Accha is set in the 1970s and follows a pair of spies working across the India-Pakistan border as one tries to sabotage the other’s nuclear program. The trailer looks exciting, and I’m a sucker for Cold War intrigue, especially when seen from an angle I’m not as familiar with.

Mononoke The Movie: Chapter II – The Ashes of Rage (Aug. 14)

If you’re into visually stunning anime, you need to pencil Mononoke The Movie: Chapter II in on your calendar. The sequel to 2024’s Phantom in the Rain, it takes us back to Edo-period Japan, where the Tokugawa shogunate has begun its transformation into an industrialized nation. Ashes of Rage follows several characters as they discover the dark secrets of the Inner Chambers of the Edo castle.
