Mozart AI, also known as Artos Inc., today announced that it has raised $6 million in a seed round led by Balderton Capital to further its development of advancing its generative artificial intelligence music creation engine.

Eventbrite Inc. founder Kevin Hartz, Oscar-winning director Charles Ferguson, Mercuri, EWOR and Emery Wells also participated in the round, alongside existing investors and strategic angels from music, AI and creator technology. This funding comes just months after a $1.1 million pre-seed, bringing the total capital raised to over $7 million.

The company said it was built by musicians for artists and music enthusiasts by providing the Digital Audio Workstation, a tool that has been around since the 1990s. Mozart updated it for a new generation of creative professionals.

The new Generative Audio Workstation created by Mozart supports both ground-up music creation with AI assistance and agentic music creation that is prompt-driven.

With the tool, users can produce generated music that includes multiple instruments, control melody, harmony and vocals. Additionally, generative image models will produce accompanying artwork for the music. After mastering and fine-tuning it to their liking, patrons can then use the company’s service to generate music videos up to one minute long.

“The creative process has always been integral to music-making and to music’s role in shaping global culture,” said co-founder and Chief Executive Sundar Arvind. “Far from replacing creativity, AI is leveling up that adrenaline-filled process through which musicians compose and discover the right sounds.”

Mozart’s tool comes at a time when AI music is slowly changing the landscape of music online for listeners. The company’s marketing itself reflects this, as it claims that more than 100,000 users in two months have created more than 1 million songs. Some artists already released music on Spotify and received more than 10 million streams.

AI music enters the public sphere

AI-generated songs have begun to proliferate in digital venues, including the abovementioned Spotify. Recently, a tune named “Walk My Walk” by Breaking Rust hit the top of the country Billboard chart on Spotify, stirring up controversy with artists. Although this achievement isn’t as notable as it sounds, it is a clear indication that AI music is making inroads into the marketplace.

In 2024, artists and musicians called for protections against AI. Although they noted the enormous potential to empower human creativity, they also decried how, when irresponsibly used, it could erode trust in music. They argued that it could create a predatory and problematic assault on the industry, as the market is flooded with synthetic music.

“MozartAI is building powerful generative tools for the next era of collaborative music creation that will enable every artist – from casual creators to professional producers – to turn any idea into a release-ready song in minutes, with commercial rights,” added Arvind.

Mozart is entering a market alongside other generative music creation startups, including Suno Inc., which also provides tools for both professionals and everyday people to create their own music. Enterprise AI giants and large language model companies have also thrown their hat in the ring, including Nvidia Inc. with Fugatto, Stability AI Ltd.’s Stable Audio Open, Meta Platform Inc.’s MusicGen and ElevenLabs Inc.
