In MotoGP racing, milliseconds matter — and real-time data analysis can mean the difference between a podium finish and a lost lead. That’s why NetApp Inc. empowers Ducati Motor Holding to collect, transfer and analyze data on the fly — enabling engineers to monitor engine performance, tire pressure, braking and rider behavior in real time, according to Davide Barana (pictured), technical director at Ducati Corse, the racing division of Ducati.
Ducati’s Davide Barana talks with theCUBE about the importance of real-time data analysis in MotoGP.
“Having a partner such as NetApp is fundamental for the nowadays motorsport,” Barana said. “In particular, that operation track had to be very fast because when the bike entered the garage, we have only a few minutes to download the data, run the analysis to verify that everything is working fine and possibly propose setting changes. This means that we have to be able to analyze fast, transfer the data from the track side to the headquarters and to Bologna, because we also take advantage of remote capability to involve more engineers into the analysis process. This, I think, can give you an idea how NetApp is fundamental.”
Barana spoke with theCUBE’s Rebecca Knight and Rob Strechay at the “Architecting Outcomes in the Era of Intelligence” event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, News Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how NetApp enables Ducati to have a competitive edge in the motorsports world through real-time data analysis. (* Disclosure below.)
How real-time data analysis is redefining the MotoGP world
NetApp enables Ducati to harness real-time telemetry and historical data to enhance performance, refine decision-making and stay ahead in the high-stakes world of MotoGP. This real-time data analysis is vital for improving lap times, reliability, and race-day tactics, according to Barana.
“Motorsport has changed a lot in the last 20 years,” he said. “The performance can be announced only through technology, that nowadays means information technology. That means again, data and data management, data and transfer, data analysis. I think NetApp is the right partner to have in this field.”
Real-time data analysis transforms motorsports from a reactive to a proactive discipline, significantly enhancing performance, safety and competitiveness. High-performance computing also plays a critical role in real-time monitoring by enabling the early detection of mechanical issues, Barana pointed out.
“I think I’m very interested in the future because I think the increased capability in terms of HPC and data transfer will even enhance our way of working,” he said. “I imagine we will be able to run even more complex simulation tools or apply more massively AI also in new areas where at the moment we are still using standard approaches. I think in the future, the key of success will be how much better and faster than our competitors we will be able to implement this new technology into our process.”
