NetBSD 11.0 release preparations have begun. The NetBSD developers are hoping to officially release NetBSD 11.0 in October and for that to happen the release candidate would be out in September and daily beta builds can already be tested.
NetBSD 11.0 release work has started with this update bringing many enhancements to its Linux emulation support, a lot of enhancements to its RISC-V architecture port, up-to-date X.Org components, PVH boot on x86 is now supported with QEMU and Firecracker, various new thermal / fan control drivers, and a variety of other hardware support improvements.
NetBSD 11.0 in user-space adds support for manipulating/querying UEFI variables, many packages have been updated, and more. What didn’t make the cut for the NetBSD 11.0 release branching though is the latest DRM/KMS graphics driver improvements and their big WiFi driver renewal effort.
NetBSD 11.0 is also splitting more of their ISO images now between CD-R size and full DVD-R sets to help those installing NetBSD from a CD drive rather than a DVD drive and unable to boot from a USB stick as well.
More details on the release preparations that have begun for NetBSD 11.0 can be found via the NetBSD.org blog. Great seeing NetBSD 11.0 on track for releasing later this year.
