After the abortive takeover of Warne Bros. Discovery for the benefit of Paramount Skydance, Netflix seems to have found its new fad. The streaming giant has for some time been interested in the startup InterPositive, specializing in artificial intelligence and founded by a certain… Ben Affleck.

It was in 2022 that the Hollywood actor created InterPositive based on his experience as a director. With decades of experience in the industry, particularly in screenwriting and production, Ben Affleck could only see the enormous and inefficient costs of post-production.

According to him, editors overuse visual effects to correct filming errors and many decisions taken too late cause budgets to explode. This is where InterPositive comes in to make life easier for directors with AI that helps teams correct or adjust shots more quickly.

But this AI is not intended to replace directors. It was designed by a director for directors. The idea would therefore be to help them correct certain visual details which would generate enormous costs in post-production.

“We built restrictions to protect creative intent.” — Ben Affleck, founder of InterPositive

InterPositive: an AI at the service of creators, not against them

The problem is that it’s often the smallest details that cost the most to fix. Imagine a cable present in the field that must be removed, a decor to be modified or an element of the plan to be corrected. These are all the details that InterPositive’s artificial intelligence can quickly spot and remove to make the work of editors easier.

But Ben Affleck makes it a point of honor that his AI is not a generative agent. “We built restrictions to protect the creative intention,” points out the 53-year-old actor. Artificial intelligence already having bad press in the cinema industry, that of InterPositive will not create anything: it will only be content to work on already existing plans.

According to Bloomberg, the acquisition of InterPositive by Netflix could be around $600 million. The startup’s 16 engineers and scientists would join Netflix, while Ben Affleck would remain an advisor to Netflix.
