NETFLIX has revealed plans to launch a new type of TV show on its app.
The streaming giant has teamed up with another major tech firm – bringing as many as 16 titles to the service.
Spotify has promised to bring a long list of its video podcasts to Netflix for the first time.
The bulk of the titles are related to sports, but there are seven that fit into the Culture/Lifestyle and True Crime categories.
Netflix called it a “wide-ranging deal” and promised that this initial launch would be “just the start”.
“At Netflix, we’re always looking for new ways to entertain our members, wherever and however they want to watch,” said said Netflix content licensing boss Lauren Smith.

“As video podcasts continue to grow in popularity, our partnership with Spotify allows us to bring full video versions of these top shows to both Netflix and Spotify audiences.
“From pop culture and lifestyle to true crime and sports, this curated selection of video podcasts adds fresh voices and new perspectives to Netflix, making our entertainment lineup more exciting than ever.”
Spotify has an enormous selection podcasts, some of which are filmed for viewing too.
But many people still go to Spotify just for music, or for purely listening to podcasts.
So this is an easy way for Spotify to get more eyes on its video podcasts.
And it also targets people who might not even use Spotify, like Apple Music users.
The launch line-up includes several sports shows like The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Zach Lowe Show, and The Ringer F1 Show.
And viewers will also be able to get non-sports content like The Rewatchables, The Big Picture, Recipe Club, Conspiracy Theories, and Serial Killers.
But there is one notable omission: The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.
It’s one of the most-listened-to and most-watched podcasts in the world, and is a blockbuster hit for Spotify.
Rogan joined Spotify exclusively in 2020, and signed a new deal with the streaming company last year that was reportedly worth up to $250 million.
However, Rogan’s podcast won’t be part of the initial slate of video podcasts coming to Netflix.
