It’s simply called “Senua”: Ninja Theory has presented a third part of its “Hellblade” series. The action-adventure follows “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2”, which was released in 2024, and will appear in 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, PC and Playstation 5.

In a detailed interview on the Xbox Wire blog, studio head Dom Matthews explains why the game isn’t called “Hellblade 3” and what sets it apart from its predecessors. The name signals a new approach to gaming, explains Matthews: more gameplay mechanics than its more experience-oriented predecessors.

“Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” and “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2” were cinematically staged, very linear gaming experiences with very little gameplay – critics would dismiss the games as “walking simulators”. According to Matthews, in “Senua” the focus should be roughly evenly distributed between combat, exploration and puzzles. The trailer clearly shows an increased focus on the combat system.

Senua now fights against several enemies at the same time, using special maneuvers and various weapons: short and long axes, dual wielding and throwing weapons are used. Skills should be able to be used both in combat and in exploration. There will even be boss fights in “Senua” – another novelty.

“Project Mara” canceled

For “Senua,” Ninja Theory brought the entire team together on a single project for the first time in more than twelve years – this was most recently the case with the development of “DmC: Devil May Cry.” “Project Mara”, the studio’s previously announced horror game, pays the price: Matthews decided to stop development in order to concentrate all capacities on “Senua”.

“Senua” will also appear on the Playstation 5 immediately upon release. This distinguishes the third “Hellblade” part from “Gears of War: E-Day”, which was revealed as an Xbox exclusive title at the same showcase. The upcoming “Clockwork Revolution” is also not coming to the Playstation.

There is no clear pattern as to which Xbox games appear on Sony’s console. “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II” was initially released only for Xbox and PC in May 2024 and only came to the Playstation 5 as an enhanced version in August 2025.
