All that for that? Last week, Nintendo shook the internet with the release of a horrific teaser surrounded by mystery.Who is Emio?” we then questioned the manufacturer’s social accounts. Without knowing if the images were real shots or simply photorealistic, the players went with their own theories. The broadcast of this video so soon after a Nintendo also reinforced our questions. A revelation from the Bloober Team studio (Silent Hill 2 Remake) even hinted at an unexpected collaboration to bring a new license to life. In the space of a week, gamers were excited at the idea of discovering a new and more mature franchise under the Nintendo banner, but unfortunately this is not the case.

The Kyoto firm has just revealed the title that was hidden behind this mysterious marketing operation, and it risks disappointing many players. Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Club Detective is none other than a sequel to the legendary visual novel franchise that has long remained exclusive to Japan. It was invited to the West for the first time with Switch remakes of the games Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir et Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind released in 2021. This news will not fail to delight fans of this niche genre, but the excitement of the first trailer may fade for many. The first information is nevertheless promising, with first and foremost the confirmation of a French localization.

An imminent release

Players won’t have to wait long to get their hands on this mystery-solving game. Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Club Detective will be available on Nintendo Switch from August 29, in digital and physical versions : something to satisfy collectors at heart. A collector’s version of the title seems however reserved for the Japanese territory where this license has been a reference since 1988. Unlike the remakes of the first two opus, this new chapter will offer dialogues entirely translated into French.

Is this another urban legend…or something much more sinister?

For this first opus in over 30 years, the producer and author of the series Yoshio Sakamoto has invented a new supernatural scenario that will chill our blood. Players will have to investigate an urban legend according to which a masked man appears in front of crying young girls to offer them a paper bag with a strange smile in exchange for their lives. Why do the victims make such an exchange, and who is hiding behind Emio, the Smiling Man? These are premises that are reminiscent of the great days of Japanese horror games on YouTube, such as Corpse Party. And you, are you satisfied or disappointed with this new game?
