Chinese smartphone brand Oppo on Thursday launched its new flagship Find X8 series, which includes the Find X8s, Find X8s+, and Find X8 Ultra. Positioned as the brand’s photography-focused flagship, the Find X8 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and features a next-gen 2K display. The company touts it as the “ultimate tool for night portrait photography.”

Why it matters: In a crowded smartphone market that has seen a slowdown in breakthrough innovations, manufacturers are increasingly focusing on imaging capabilities. Oppo’s Find X8 Ultra exemplifies this trend.

Details: The Oppo Find X8 Ultra will go on sale on April 16, with the 12GB + 256GB model priced at RMB 6,499 ($889).

  • The device is 8.78mm thick and features a 6.82-inch 2K ultra-narrow bezel flat display made with BOE’s X2 material, challenging the notion that flagship phones have to be bulky, according to Oppo. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and equipped with a 6,100mAh battery. The company said it supports 100W wired and 50W wireless charging, with the wired option able to fully charge the device in 35 minutes.
  • The rear penta-camera system includes a 50MP wide-angle main camera with a 1-inch Sony LYT900 sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 50MP telephoto lens, a 50MP periscope telephoto lens, and a 2MP Danxia True Color lens.
  • The Danxia True Color lens is equipped with the LUMO imaging system and introduces the industry-first “zonal color temperature sensing” technology, which detects differences between the subject and ambient light sources to resolve issues such as skin tone distortion and background overexposure in night portrait photography, Oppo said.
  • The camera boasts a dual periscope telephoto system with a focal range of 70mm to 135mm, offering lossless optical zoom to eliminate the quality loss from digital zoom, as stated by the company. Co-developed with Hasselblad for color accuracy, it supports 4K/60fps Dolby Vision HDR video recording across all focal lengths.

Context: Oppo’s smartphone lineup is mainly divided into the imaging-focused Find X series, the foldable Find N series l, and the mid-range Reno series.

  • This year, another Chinese phone brand Vivo is charting a new path by entering the robotics sector with its newly launched Robot Lab, demonstrating how phone companies are increasingly looking for new expansion opportunities.
  • In March, Vivo announced the establishment of its Robot Lab at the Boao Forum for Asia. To focus on the consumer market, particularly in household scenarios, the initiative aims to cater to needs in the areas of domestic chores, elderly care, and education.
  • The lab adopts a dual-engine approach: the “brain” is powered by Vivo’s self-developed BlueHeart large model matrix for intelligent decision-making and learning, while the “eyes” leverage mixed reality (MR) technology to build a spatial perception system for enhanced environmental understanding and interaction.
