Oracle Solaris 11.4.81 CBE is now available as the newest release of this Oracle Solaris “Common Build Environment” version that is essentially a community-supported. non-production version of Solaris intended for free / open-source software developers. Oracle Solaris 11.4.81 CBE comes after not seeing any CBE updates the past three years and now rather unexpectedly seeing this new version drop even with Solaris very rarely making any news these days.

Oracle Solaris 11.4.81 CBE incorporates all of the Solaris updates over the past three years, including new GCC compiler versions, other updated compiler versions, new versions of Python and PHP and other key packages, many libc updates, and a lot of other general open-source software updates at large.

The Solaris kernel has improved a bit over the past three years, including generic in-kernel I/O resiliency events and other changes. Oracle Solaris 11.4.81 CBE does carry some ZFS file-system improvements too like ZFS clonedir mountpoints under .zfs/clone, ZFS File Retention, ZFS mount/unmount -r, and ZFS send with raw crypto. On the desktop side, GNOME 45 is available and the X.Org Server is central to its desktop support.

The lengthy list of Solaris CBE changes can be found via the release announcement.
