Oxford Nanopore Technologies has announced it has taken legal action against MGI Australia for infringing on the company’s patents.
The University of Oxford spinout said that with the launch of MGI Australia’s product, Cyclone SEQ WT-02, the company had infringed on four patents held by Oxford Nanopore in Australia.
“Oxford Nanopore’s decision to commence legal proceedings against MGI has been carefully considered and reflects the company’s responsibility to protect the intellectual property that underpins its sensing platform, which is now widely used across Research and Applied sectors in Australia,” the company said.
“Throughout this process the primary focus will continue to be on customers, operations and partners. Protecting IP ensures that investments in new technology can be made available to customers and partners.”
The London-listed company is a pioneer in nanopore DNA and RNA sequencing technology used in genomic research, clinical diagnostics and applied markets such as food and crop safety testing.
The company’s share price fell slightly today, around 1%, however, it is up more than 60% since the start of the year.
