Every week, Netflix deploys a bunch of new content for viewers to stream. Watching all of it would take you more time than exists in the week, so I start my Friday by selecting three top choices for the weekend and week to come. The third week of October has some fun stuff, including a new adaptation from the writer of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a terrifying Indonesian zombie film, and more. Here are our top picks.

This Week on Netflix: PCMag’s Picks

The Perfect Neighbor (Oct. 17)

In a heavily armed society, even the mildest disputes can turn fatal. That’s the story at the heart of The Perfect Neighbor, a new documentary told through surveillance and body camera footage. In the town of Ocala, Florida, two women’s arguments escalate until one shoots the other, and this harrowing film dives deep into the impact of “stand your ground” laws on the use of deadly force.

The Twits (Oct. 17)

One of Roald Dahl’s funniest books, The Twits revolves around the most disgusting married couple in the world, constantly playing cruel pranks on each other and tormenting the myriad monkeys in their care. When their horrific amusement park threatens to take over the town, a pair of children need to face off with the terrible Twits.

  • Directors: Todd Demong, Phil Johnston, Katie Shanahan

  • Cast: Johnny Vegas, Margo Martindale, Natalie Portman

  • Genres: Animation

  • Rating: PG

The Elixir (Oct. 23)

The source of a zombie outbreak can come from anywhere, including ancient curses and meteorites from space. In the new Indonesian horror flick The Elixir, a new herbal potion concocted by a traditional medicine doctor accidentally wakes the dead, and now all Hell is breaking loose. Director Kimo Stamboel is one of the top names in Indonesian horror, so this is worth a look.
