Watch below as Stalman realizes halfway through the video that the MacBook Neo can handle more demanding photo and video production workflows than he initially thought.

’Editing 4K video on this computer is totally fine even with every other app running’

As today’s embargo lifted, most reviews of the MacBook Neo seemed to agree on one general point: despite all the talk about its non-upgradable 8GB of RAM and “iPhone chip,” the laptop holds up surprisingly well.

Few reviews captured the moment expectations flipped quite as clearly as Tyler Stalman’s video, MacBook Neo: Can It Handle Pro Apps?

In it, Stalman opens every single app in the Applications folder, then zips through his Photo library, as he notices that performance remains “pretty darn quick,” adding that he’ll just skip ahead to a more heavy-duty task, since he “didn’t think this was going to work as well” as it did.

Once he jumps into Final Cut Pro (while every other app installed in the MacBook Neo is still running), he’s equally surprised to see it smoothly playback a 4K video, complete with histograms, vector scope, and so on.

As the video progresses, Stalman throws increasingly demanding tasks and workflows, and it takes him a while to finally get the MacBook Neo to struggle.

Be sure to check out the full video, where Stalman runs through photo and video processing workflows and realizes the MacBook Neo holds its own far better than many expected.

If you get a MacBook Neo, leave your own impressions in the comments below. In the meantime, check out 9to5Mac’s review of the MacBook Neo.
