Pluribus season 1 is over, and in an interview creator Vince Gilligan gave during the show’s run, he revealed how hard it was to land on the meaning-filled final title.

Vince Gilligan says Pluribus had around 100 different title ideas, with one standout worst

Before the Apple TV series debuted, the word ‘pluribus’ wasn’t one you heard every day.

The title of the show was inspired by “e pluribus unum,” the Latin phrase meaning “out of many, one.” It was used far more commonly in the early days of the United States.

But before landing on ‘Pluribus’ and its clever meaning as the title, Vince Gilligan revealed in a recent interview that there may have been over 100 alternate ideas in contention.

Though he didn’t share the full list, Gilligan did reveal what he called “the worst one of all.”

That potential title was: Be Kind, Remind.

Gilligan shared the title on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz. He said:

We were in a title desert for over two or three years trying to figure [it] out. […]

We had a list of nearly 100, maybe over 100 titles. The worst one of all, I can tell you, was ‘Be Kind, Remind.’

Pluribus seems like the perfect title given its meaning and the premise of the series. At this point it’s hard to imagine it being named anything else—certainly not Be Kind, Remind.

But as Gilligan has made clear in other interviews, sometimes the creative process takes far longer than you would like. Here’s hoping the development of season 2 proves the exception.

Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month and features hit TV shows and movies like Ted Lasso, Severance, Pluribus, and more. You can also get it through the Apple One bundle.
